The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will present AI & Filmmaking Week 2026, a four-day programme from 17 to 20 March 2026. Organised by the School of Future Media, the event will convene pioneering filmmakers, leading technologists, and global industry figures to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping every facet of cinema—from storytelling and acting to production, ethics, and governance.
The Week will feature the Asian premiere of South Korea’s first AI-generated feature film, insights from Oscar-winning filmmakers and leading AI artists, and a keynote dialogue with Ms Janet Yang, —the first Chinese American President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the organisation behind the Oscars)—and Academy Award winning filmmaker and HKU School of Future Media Director Professor Ruby Yang, offering a Hollywood perspective on the impact and future of AI in the film industry. The programme positions HKU as a global hub for forward-thinking dialogue on the future of screen media and emerging technologies.
“Generative AI is lowering the barriers to filmmaking and opening the door for young creators around the world, including those in developing regions such as Africa, to experiment with storytelling in ways that were previously impossible. It can also help revive history, culture, and education by making the past more accessible and engaging for new audiences. At the same time, we must ensure that AI is developed responsibly—by promoting transparency, AI safety, and respect for intellectual property. The future of AI in media must be guided not only by technological innovation, but also by strong ethical principles,” Professor Ruby Yang said.
AI & Filmmaking Week 2026 reflects HKU’s commitment to shaping the future of creative media through interdisciplinary dialogue, innovation, and global engagement, and positions Hong Kong as a critical node in the emerging global ecosystem of AI-driven cinema. The Week coincides with FILMART, one of Asia’s top film industry events, taking place concurrently in Hong Kong.

About the School of Future Media
The School of Future Media is for a new generation of storytellers who will shape the evolving media world. Established in October 2025, the School combined HKU’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre, the new Documentary and AI Filmmaking division, and the Global Creative Industries division, formerly homed at the Faculty of Arts. This powerful combination allows us to offer an education unlike any other: a deep commitment to factual reporting, fused with practical, forward-looking training in the technologies redefining how stories are created, told, discovered, and experienced.
