The annual Reading Battle Award Presentation Ceremony will be held by the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on June 28 (Friday). The theme for this year is “Authors of Tomorrow”, which features a group of “Little Authors” from primary schools in Hong Kong.
The event includes a talk on the journey from reading to writing by Dr Samuel Chu, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, HKU, and creator of the award winning e-learning platform – Reading Battle; and Ms Helen Chan, Senior Teacher and Teacher Librarian at Lam Tin Methodist Primary School.
The Reading Battle platform aims to promote and encourage an enjoyable reading experience among primary school students. It has been successful in boosting students’ interest in writing and their language abilities. The online platofrm is currently used by more than 40 local schools. In 2018, Dr Chu’s team started the first annual creative writing workshop to guide top readers in the Reading Battle in writing their own stories. At the workshop, these outstanding students grew from avid readers to creative writers - a group of brilliant “Little Authors”. Some of these “Little Authors” will share their writing experience at the ceremony.
At the ceremony, awards including the Interschool Top Performers Award (English/Chinese books) and the Most Improved Award (English/Chinese books) will also be presented to Reading Battle users. It is expected that over 250 primary school students, teachers, and parents will attend the ceremony.
