HKU secures significant funding in the latest Areas of Excellence Scheme and Theme-based Research Scheme

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is delighted to announce its success in securing significant funding from the Research Grants Council's (RGC) Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme and the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) for 2023/24.
Under the TRS scheme, nine research projects were awarded, with HKU researchers leading two of them - "Investigation of the Immunosuppressive Microenvironment in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma", led by Professor Xin-yuan Guan, Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Liver Research (HKU), and co-led by Professor Anne Wing-mui Lee, Deputy Hospital Chief Executive (Clinical Services & Education) of HKU-Shenzhen Hospital; and "Overcoming Technical Limits of Copper Hybrid Bonding for Advanced Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits", led by Professor Lain-Jong Li, Professor, Chair of Future Electronics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The two projects have secured fundings of over HKD115 million. Additionally, HKU researchers participate in six other awarded projects. Professor Jimmy Jiao, Professor in Hydrogeology at the Department of Earth Sciences, is the Co-Principal Investigator of the HKUST coordinated project "Digital Twin-empowered Landslide Emergency Risk Management“.
Of the two projects awarded under the AoE Scheme, Professor Jimmy Jiao is the Co-Principal Investigator of the project "Study of the Regional Earth System for Sustainable Development under Climate Change in the Greater Bay Area". HKU researchers also participate in the other awarded project "Advanced Antenna Technology for a Smart World".
The substantial funding received under the two schemes will propel HKU's research initiatives, strengthen collaborations with global institutions, and attract top-tier talent to the university. These accomplishments will bolster HKU's worldwide reputation as a premier research institution and promote a culture of innovation and excellence. The University remains dedicated to seeking further funding opportunities to support its research endeavours and contribute to the betterment of Hong Kong and the world.
