Embraces Diverse Talent Development
09 Aug 2023
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) values holistic student development and has admitted students with excellent academic performance, clear ambitions, and diverse talents and interests this year through various admission schemes.
HKU attracted numerous top students through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), including one "top scorer" and a “super top scorer” as well as nearly half of the top scorers with 5** in 6 subjects and 5** in 5 subjects. They will study a wide range of programmes, including Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Global Management, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, Science Master Class and Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws.
This year, HKU admitted 27 President’s Scholars who achieved an average score of 42 in the best five subjects.
The University admitted over 40% of the Top 1% of DSE candidates in Hong Kong, totalling 102 students. The admission results for various programmes were remarkable, with the business school programmes particularly standing out. Among them, the Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Global Management programme had admitted students with an average of 45.58 scores in their best six subjects, which was the highest among similar global business and management programmes and all business-related programmes. The Faculty of Law continued to attract the most outstanding students aspiring to pursue a career in law. All HKDSE candidates who scored three subjects of 5** or above applying for related law programmes were admitted to HKU.
Through the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS), HKU admitted nearly a hundred students, almost a 20% increase compared to last year. The overall HKDSE results of the admitted students were impressive. Among them, four students achieved high-flying results with 5** in 6 subjects and 5** in 5 subjects.
In addition to admitting several top athletes through the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme this year, HKU also admitted 19 outstanding athletes through the long-standing Sports Scholarship Scheme. HKU provides resources and support for these elite athletes, assisting them to achieve excellence in both sports and academics.
This year, HKU admitted 96 local non-Chinese-speaking students, the highest number among the eight funded universities. The admission results were very satisfactory, with these students enrolling in various programmes across 10 faculties.
“HKU has always been supportive of students' diverse development, valuing their academic performance while encouraging them to excel in non-academic areas and achieve success. The University proactively discovers and admits talented students through various admission schemes, providing them with more opportunities to unleash their potentials," said Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange.
The Education Bureau initiated SNDAS programme is entering its second year, HKU has been actively supporting the initiative, as it allows a more comprehensive assessment of student performance, rather than solely relying on HKDSE results. "We are pleased to see that students admitted through this scheme have clear aspirations and achievements in non-academic areas such as community service, sports, and arts. Their performance in the HKDSE is also impressive, with an average score comparable to our overall admissions standard, reflecting the scheme’s success," added Professor Yim.
