The Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), ranked 2nd in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Straumann on 21 August 2026 to support the development of implant dentistry clinical teaching and services at the Institute for Advanced Dentistry - Multi-Specialty Clinic (IAD-MSC). The collaboration will further strengthen professional dental education and make advanced oral healthcare more affordable to Hong Kong citizens.
The agreement was signed by Professor Lijian Jin, Dean of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, and Mr Patrick Loh, Executive Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific of Straumann Group. Under the agreement, Straumann will sponsor a comprehensive portfolio of implant solutions and biomaterials, with sponsorship covering up to 900 units of each specified product category for the coming five years. The sponsorship will support students from four Master programmes, namely Periodontology, Implant Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Prosthodontics, in providing implant treatments for patients.
This collaboration will further enhance the clinical training of Master students by enabling them to manage more advanced implant cases, thereby strengthening their professional knowledge and clinical skills and helping to cultivate more highly-qualified specialist dentists for the community.
Furthermore, the collaboration enables IAD-MSC to optimise operational costs, thereby enhancing the affordability and accessibility of advanced dental care for patients. This initiative will help improve the oral health and quality of life of members of the public and contribute to the overall well-being of the Hong Kong community.
Professor Jin expressed his gratitude for Straumann’s support and said, “This collaboration reflects the shared commitment of HKU and Straumann to advancing dental education and community service.” Expanding on this statement, Professor George Pelekos, Programme Director of the Master of Science in Implant Dentistry programme, added: “Our mission is to set a new standard of clinical training in implant dentistry while expanding treatment opportunities for patients. In this way, we are not only nurturing the next generation of dental professionals but also delivering tangible benefits to society — a clear demonstration of HKU’s commitment to academic excellence and social impact.”
