HKU Physicists Awarded 2025 Brillouin Medal for Discovery in Phononics
Professor Nicholas X. Fang, Global STEM Scholar and Jockey Club (JC) STEM Lab Director in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Xiang Zhang, HKU President and Vice-Chancellor, and Chair of Physics in the Department of Physics, have been jointly awarded the 2025 Brillouin Medal by the International Phononics Society (IPS). The honour recognises their pioneering discovery of ultrasonic metamaterials with negative elastic modulus.

Nobel Laureate Professor Ferenc Krausz Joins HKU as Chair Professor
HKU welcomes Professor Ferenc Krausz, 2023 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to join the University as the Chair Professor in the Department of Physics under the Faculty of Science, commencing November 2025. A luminary in ultrafast laser science and quantum optics, Professor Krausz’s arrival brings new dimensions to HKU’s research excellence, further solidifying the University’s global leadership in upstream research and pioneering new frontiers.
